Payroll services for BC small businesses
Published on Published
Staff paid on time, source deductions remitted on the CRA’s schedule, T4s and ROEs handled, and the payroll in the same books as everything else.
Short answer: we run payroll for BC small businesses as part of the monthly bookkeeping. We process pay on your schedule, calculate and remit CPP, EI and income tax on the schedule the CRA assigns you, issue records of employment when someone leaves, prepare and file T4s at year end, and handle the WorkSafeBC reporting from the same numbers. It is included in the Complete plan, at a fixed monthly fee quoted in writing within one business day.
What the payroll service covers
Why payroll sits with the bookkeeping
Payroll is where small errors become notices. A remittance a few days late carries a penalty, and a T4 summary that does not match the year’s remittances brings a discrepancy letter. Running payroll inside the same books means the remittances, the bank and the T4s are reconciled every month rather than discovered in February.
It also means the decisions that cross over are made once: whether an owner takes salary or dividends, whether a worker is an employee or a contractor, and when the Employer Health Tax starts to apply as payroll grows.
Starting payroll, or moving it to us
A new employer needs a CRA payroll account under its business number and, in most cases, a WorkSafeBC account before the first pay date; we set both up. If you already run payroll, we take over from a clean pay period, using the year-to-date figures so the T4s come out right.
Questions about payroll
How often are payroll remittances due?
It depends on the remitter type the CRA assigns you. A new employer starts as a quarterly remitter unless the CRA says otherwise; regular remitters pay by the 15th of the month after the pay date, and larger employers remit more often.
Do you issue ROEs?
Yes. We issue records of employment when someone leaves, as part of the payroll service.
Can you run payroll for just me as the owner?
Yes. An owner-manager paid a salary is on payroll like anyone else, with a T4 at year end. Whether salary or dividends suits you better is worth deciding first.
Which software do you run payroll in?
QuickBooks Online Payroll for QuickBooks files, and a connected payroll app such as Wagepoint for Xero, so pay runs post straight into the books.
Is payroll in every plan?
Payroll, T4s and ROEs and WorkSafeBC reporting are in the Complete plan, for businesses with staff.
